DIPLOMATS have blamed the rise of ''adventure tourism'' for the ballooning number of Australians getting into trouble overseas, saying holiday-makers are pushing the boundaries by travelling to far-flung and dangerous locations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says there are now so many adventurous Australians touring the globe that on any one day diplomats can be dealing with up to 1600 citizens needing consular help.

''This statistic reflects the reality that cases are more complex and taking longer to resolve; partly as a result of Australians' enthusiasm for travelling to exotic, remote and sometimes risky locations,'' DFAT said in a submission to a parliamentary inquiry into the government's handling of kidnapping cases.

The northern European summer is traditionally one of the busiest periods for diplomats dealing with Australians getting into strife overseas. The 17-day German beer-drinking festival Oktoberfest typically produces a huge caseload for the department - so much so that DFAT normally sends a special consular team to Munich to aid jailed and hospitalised Australians.

Almost three years ago diplomats were forced to help a number of Australians in Munich who had been arrested for giving ''atomic wedgies'' to fellow revellers. Diplomats tried to explain to German authorities that the act was normally seen as a harmless prank in Australia.
